A single speed bike or fixie is a great option for city riding, winter cycling, short journeys and commuting. The bike has only one gear and no derailleurs, making them mechanically simple, as well as helping to build your fitness and technique. Single speeds can have a freewheel, which means you can stop pedalling and coast as you ride, as you would with a geared bike. A fixed-gear, fixie, or fixed-wheel is like a track bicycle and doesn't have a freewheel, so your legs are permanently engaged.
