Six tips for big rides or little adventures

1. Fuel on nuts. Packed with protein, fibre and essential fats, nuts are a good alternative to sugary snacks. Plus they don't melt in the heat & aren't easily squashed.

Top Tube Notes

2. Note key towns and important distances, food stops, or just a list of villages. Stick the notes to your top tube to help track your progress without having to refer to your phone.

3. Grab a bike packing bag from Apidura or Ortlieb. Super lightweight & offering plenty of volume, the bags attach with Velcro straps, making light work of fitting and adjusting.

Pack FlipFlops

4. Flip-flops are perfect footwear if you're stopping overnight. Instead of clomping about in cycling shoes or lugging a pair of trainers around, stow a pair of 'slides' in your bag.

5. Get a USB back-up charger from Argos or any electronics store, plug it into your phone or lights, and add juice-mid ride. USB back-up chargers weigh virtually nothing and are super small, too.

6. RidewithGPS.com is free to use and makes it simple to plan routes and upload them to your Wahoo or Garmin computer. The website allows you to add notes about water stop or tricky junctions & notifications pop up on screen mid-ride.

Break longer routes into two files, making it quicker to load on the device.
