Hugh Carthy wins the Tour de Korea 2014

Tour de Korea 2014

19 year old Hugh Carthy (Rapha Condor JLT) successfully defended his overnight lead in the Tour of Korea on Sunday to take the race win.

Rapha Condor JLT carefully policed moves from rivals during the short 82-kilometre final day of the UCI 2.1-ranked event.

In addition to winning the overall classification, Carthy also secured the white jersey of best young rider, topping a successful week for the British squad, who netted three stage wins along the way.

It's the second time the team has won the Tour of Korea, after Mike Cuming topped the general classification in 2013.

"We had to be very vigilant and all ride as one", said Carthy after his win.

"We controlled the race from kilometre zero and a few of the sprinter's teams were keen to keep it together for a bunch sprint so we had a little bit of help along the way. It was quite a simple stage on paper but in practice it was always going to be difficult. I'm glad to get it away now and I'm pleased with the outcome."

Park Sungbaek (KSPO) took the bunch sprint at the end of the final stage, as Carthy finished safely in the peloton.

Hugh Carthy and his fellow team mates from Rapha Condor JLT are part of the development squad. The Tour de Korea team consisted of six riders, four of whom are all under the age of twenty three whilst Mike Cuming and Richard Handley are aged twenty four. The aim for Rapha Condor JLT is to develop young riders and give them a platform to perform and gain experience in UCI level stage races.
